You guys are really filling me with confidence! I may be checking in again soon JumPer depending on what I find back there. Hopefully I won't be needing the airbag too!! ;-)

I'm in the same boat troubleshooting my cruise control system. Good thing is if you cant find a rover in the yard to pull a vacuum pump from, VW's used the same pump and connector in their cars from 89 to around 95. After 95 to about 2000 they switched to a different connector but its the same pump. I havent laid hands on the CC ECU but i think it may be the same style hella unit that the VAG cars use. It's not a complex system overall. Vacuum units and switches on each of the pedals, vacuum motor, on/off switch and set speed switches as well as a VSS input to the CC ECU.

I replaced my steering wheel switches this past week. Nothing to it, disconnect the battery, two torx bolts hold the bag onto the steering wheel, three 10mm bolts hold the horn / airbag securing plate to the steering wheel which you need to remove because the wires for the switches are routed behind said plate.

nope, new steering wheel switches did not fix my problem. Next up is to test the pedal switches and the vacuum pump itself. I have an extra vacuum pump from a later VW which has the different plug but will be easily adaptable if the pump turns out to be the culprit.

well, i tested my pedal switch last night, no problem there. Hooked up the pump to 12V and tested that it was ok as well. swapped out an extra cruise switch, same thing. Checked and made sure the system held vacuum and it did as it was supposed to. Only other thing i can think to check is the main brake switch or the cruise control unit itself. Fuse for the cruise circuit was good as well fwiw. On a side note, i was lookin at the connector for the cruise pump while i had everything apart yesterday and what do you know, it had a vw part number and a tiny VW logo on it.. I'm guessing its probably the same hella cruise control ecu that VW uses so that leaves me with a wider supply of donors to pull bits from at the breakers. the brake vacuum switch is the same style and connecter that VW uses as well..
