Smile Dead Cats?

Hi all,

The catalytic converter light has come on on my '97 3.9i v8. It did so when out four wheeling last weekend. Also, got a whiff of sulphur/eggs which I understand is a sign of failing cats. I had a look underneath & see that I have flattened the wire coming from the back of the left cat - this could be the cause of the light problem but doesnt explain the egg smell!

Now im in clean green NZ & as such I can cut the cats out without a legal problem. I found this quote from Spike in the O2 sensor thread:

"You only need to replace the fronts, the rears do nothing except tell the ECU that the cats are working within spec. and have nothing to do with fuel ratio."

Also, looking at the factory disco electrical repair manual I see that the rear most wires are just temp sensors which trigger a relay which in turn flicks the dash light on - Therefore i should be able to remove the cats with no negative engine management issues??

I keep the mighty disco well serviced, but arent that fond of the cats!

Cheers

If I could get away with no cats I would lose mine also. It does sound like you have a bad one since your getting the rotting egg smell and throwing a code. I believe youll be ok removing them but im not sure if its gonna keep your emission light on

If the O2 wire is toast then you must replace that O2.
If not it cant send a signal to the ECU telling it that things are fine.
