diff lock
Yes all the DI's have it. But if it was rarely used, it most likely is "frozen" as the linkages aare exposed to all the road grime and off-road muck from below as there are not enclosed or shielded well and they are rather puny and nowhere near as sturdy as you would expect before you see it.

If you want to know what can happen when you don't understand the diff lock and get it stuck ask our young friend Calebbo how much it cost him when he tried getting unstuck by rocking between forward and reverse. Seems he blew up some parts in his drivetrain.
No it does not. There is a switch on the transfer case that grounds that light when the yoke inside the T/C slips over to lock the diff, it depresses a plunger on the CDL switch. If this switch is bad (as mine was as well) the light will never come on.
Just got my "new" '97 D1 3 weeks ago and have not tried the CDL. I know the PO did go off-road, the rear suspension is pretty banged up. Just not sure if they ever engaged the CDL, I've heard you can sometimes engage but if it's not been used it'll stay there. Is there something to feel for when trying to engage to know if it's bad or not?

Freeing the diff lock isn't too hard. Search the forums and find instructions. Follow instructions in RAVE manual to remover center console. I had to remove my shift mechanism to get some penetrating oil in there and tap with a drift. Spray and tap, spray and tap. Eventually the rod moved, and now my diff lock works fan-freakin-tastic.
