I am sure this topic has been discussed before but I would like to go into it with a little more detail. I bought a 1999 land rover discovery 1 for my son. We are in the process of changing out the transmission fluid filter. Of course there's a support bar and exhaust in the way. So far we've been able to move the support bar and we have been able to loosen all of the pan bolts without breaking them. Hopefully We can get the pan out without removing the exhaust. The problem I'm having now is the nut that attaches to the dipstick tube to the transmission pan. We cannot get that thing to budge in either direction. Does anyone have any helpful suggestions on how to get this not loose I do not want to damage anything while we're down there.

Have you soaked it with PB Blaster or other penetrate? A flare nut wrench should provide a better grip on the nut to prevent damaging it. Good luck.

To remove the nut first clean around it with a wire brush, and spray it with some penetrating oil like PB blaster. Let it sit overnight if you can. Then use a 31mm box wrench or an adjustable wrench.

To speed things up, if you have a propane torch (you won't need more heat)...after you've cleaned the nut and tube, heat the nut for about 5 minutes. Then try to remove. If still a No Go then after you heat it spray the penetrating oil and let it sit. The nut WILL come off. This video might be useful >

 

Thanks or the help. We were able to break the nut free after the use of a small torch and a big wrench. We knocked the brace forward and down but we still can't seem to get enough space to pull the pan down it catches on one corner.

 

Did you remove the front drive shaft at the diff end (see 10:14 in video)? If not the pan will fight you. This will normally get it done, if not you will need to drop the Y-pipe (Cats). Avoid this if you can because your next post will probably be re: broken exhaust manifold studs. Good Luck!

 

I had the same difficulty. I could not budge the dipstick nut even with a 30" breaker bar.
The solution I found was as follows:
1. I used a 30mm Crowfoot wrench. That is an open-end 30mm wrench end designed for use with a 1/2" drive socket wrench.
2. As noted above, pure leverage was not enough to loosen the nut. I needed the vibrations of an impact wrench (1/2" drive).
3. The impact wrench will not turn the crowfoot wrench, but the vibrations will loosen the nut.
4. Once you have loosened up the nut, you can use a long socket wrench handle to turn the crowfoot wrench.
5. Voila. It is easy after that.
