Default Door lock issue with 97 disco

Hey guys,

I recently bought a 97 discovery and have been searching your forum the last couple weeks to fix problems it has (it's been very helpful so far). Anyways, I believe the alarm unit has been removed from the vehicle. When I try to lock the vehicle from the driver door nothing happens. I am able to lock all the doors by turning the key while the door is slightly open and pushing the lock down from the inside, then closing the door while keeping the key turned. I am able to unlock with the key just fine. When the key is used to lock the door is it a mechanical action that locks the door or is it an electrical switch that activates an actuator?

I do have the rave and couldn't discern the answer from the diagrams in it.

Also, has anyone done a remote keyless entry install on a disco I?

Thanks for your help in advance!

-Adam

The truck already has keyless entry, you just need the remote.
Turning the key in the drivers door locks it mechanically and moves a actuator which in turn sends a signal to all other doors to lock.

Thanks, I'll open up the door and see if I can get it moving again

There is also a feature to keep you from locking your keys inside, where if you shut the door with it already locked, the lock pops back up. So if you're trying to lock it by pressing the button, then shutting the door...it won't stay locked. Unless of course you're holding it locked with the key.

When I hit the lock button on my remote (with all of the doors closed), the driver's lock goes down, and then pops back up right away. Actuator? Also, the lock on the passenger's door won't go down unless I physically push it down (replaced the actuator this weekend to no avail). Any suggestions? Thanks!!!

Yea, my doors and remotes are a mess too. My remote locking function works when it wants to which is about 80% of the time. My passanger door will not open from inside or outside and I only have the one remote

Spraying WD40 on the mechanism while locking and unlocking solved the problem. I also installed an inexpensive keyless entry system. Bullydog's site has all the info to install systems in the discos.

wick,

The driver's door lock actuator is bolted through slots for some side to side adjustment. Try moving the actuator, tightening it down and testing. I found out if you move it too far the door will unlock if you attempt to open it from the outside when it's locked (haha). Also make sure when you install your door panel that it still works. The sill slot adds some resistance.

Miami,

The RAVE manual has instructions on how to tighten the door latches. My guess is you just need to do that. I would try replacing your remote battery and see if that fixes your remote problem.

Spraying lube all over your doors and into the lock tab opening will certainly do something but that something will not result in your door being fixed.

You very simply, have a broken spring in the lock mechanism. Without the tension of that spring the actuator does not extend or retract fully and "pops" the lock back up.

here is the solution...
