It all boils down to bucks and ***** I guess.

What can you sell it for where you are? Will that much buy you one when you get there?

How you going to get there if you do sell yours before you go?

What can you live with if you do or don't. Don't let anyone else lead you to a poor decision on a major cross-country move.

How long do you have to make the trip?

If you decide to drive it, here's an idea. Map your route in advance. Post it on here. Ask for volunteers to identify where they are located along your route. Everyone who lives along the way could provide contact info just in case you break down along the way and need some help while traveling.

That would be a real network of help to a fellow Discovery Owner who is trying to get the most out of his Discovery.

Please understand that I am not being negative about wanting to drive your Disco cross-country. I think all of us would like to do that. I am just trying to take a practical approach to such a trip in a Discovery that sounds as if it may not be up to the tasks ahead.

I am sure there are many others on here who have no hesitation in driving their Disco anywhere they want anytimme they want to. I just feel theirs may be a bit better maintained than what yours sounds like from your original description.

Let us know what you are thinking. Good Luck.

Fixing your truck, $500.
Buying a newer one, $6000.
Shipping yours cross country, ~$500.
Car rental for a week, $500.
No brainier, drive it.

Your heating up issue while it is 115*F out and the a/c is on and you are climbing a big hill means your fan clutch is bad, replace it, $50.
Shocks are not a "must" before the trip but are highly recommended.
Brakes are a must.
They all leak oil.
From your original post thats all you need besides making sure all the fluids are in good shape.
Drive the damn thing and dont worry about it, its just a truck.
Set the cruise at 65 and you will get your best mpg, enjoy the trip and this great country of ours.
Dont sweat the small stuff, hell, I never sweat.

thanks for all of the comments guys!
well, after lookin on the interweb and going to drive a few trucks (don't hate me, but i actually drove an xterra. what a bland and boring truck that was...)
I put a deposit down on an 03 SE with 77,000 on it.
Super clean carfax, it did have 3 owners but all maintenance shown was done at the newport beach LR dealership (from all 3 PO's)

I think im gonna drive to Chicago first, then down to Wilmington NC
if anybody needs a ride along my route, let me know

Hope you at least looked at the DII side of this forum before you jumped on an 03. Did you avoid the death VIN range? If you didn't know to even look you may have bitten off way more than your DI would have been. Good luck with it and I hope you enjoy it!

There are rovers for sale all over the place here....

If you want a fun way to find them here you go...

This was a search of 94-2005 in GA http://www.jaxed.com/cgi-bin/mash.cg...mit=++++go++++

196 of them...

Lets narrow down, to just 2003 in NC
http://www.jaxed.com/cgi-bin/mash.cg...mit=++++go++++

About 35 of them...

I like 96-98's in GA area... http://www.jaxed.com/cgi-bin/mash.cg...mit=++++go++++

Again about 30 of them...

It's a really easy site to find just about any car/RV boat you could want.

You may have leaped head on into the fire. At least make sure the DII driveshaft non-greasable u-joints have been replaced with new ones with grease fittings.

Make sure you get AAA or something that will tow you in if you do drive it.

Did you buy it from a Stealership. I was in Long Beach on business trips in the 90's. Very expensive area. You might ought to get that deposit back and wait til you get to Carolina for a better price. We know the cars from LA are probably prettier..............

Default driving across country

We are driving ours from Calgary Alberta to Las Vegas then Death Vally next week. We have a 98 Discovery very well maintained, If it breaks down there it would have broken down here to.

I hope you enjoy your trip across country.

Danny, that is a great idea.
Actually for any body going on a long trip, if you are passing by central Illinois, count on my garage, tools and a cold drink anytime. Heck, just stop for the drink and some chat if nothing else. I have some good stories to tell.
