Default Drop Arm Nut..

Can someone tell me the size of the nut holding the drop arm to the steering box...

I got a 36mm socket thinking that was right but it's either 34 or 35...

I measured about 1 3/8 with my tape measure ....

I looked in the rave but couldn't find it..

So I posted... And ten minutes later I found it.. I spent an hour + before posting.. Anyway, It's 34mm...

Mods can nuke this thread if they like...

Actually mine's a 33mm. I know because I bought s socket especially for it. Couldn't get it tight enough with an adjustable wrench. Now I use the socket, breaker bar with a short cheater bar on the end of that.

I hope that one comes right off....

I had to cut the arm off mine. It was frozen on there pretty good. Just in case, soak it with some penetrating fluid beforehand.

Got the nut off no problem... That 3' long 1/2" breaker bar comes in handy. One big pop and it was loose....

Not so much with the arm...

I can't imagine it being rusted on there with as much fluid as it's been bathed in...

Penetrating oil on now..

I had to use a three armed puller. Heated it, sprayed it with penetrating oil, and whacked it with a hammer repeatedly while under tension from the puller. Finally it popped.

This.

An impact gun (electric or pneumatic) will have the same effect with a puller, FYI.

I was talking about the arm, not the nut. The nut came off easily. I had to beat the drop arm off.

I meant the arm.

If you use an impact gun on the puller, rather than a wrench, you'll have the added benefit of hammer strikes (the gun does have an internal hammer, that's how the whole impact business works) while you're tightening the ram bolt on the puller.

Once the ram bolt reaches maximum torque, all the rest is hammer blows. With my 1/2" electric DeWalt, it's never taken more than 10 seconds on the trigger to reach separation of the arm, and that's working on Northeast cars and trucks.

not all the time, lots of time under tension the hammer is the safe way to go before damaging the puller and it breaking on you.

Broke my puller using both impact driver and a 3' breaker bar on the puller stud...

It really didn't matter anyway.. Advance Auto Parts couldn't deliver my new box..

Turns out there's a really good Rover guy about 30 miles from the house..

You should have seen the Jags, Rovers, Bentleys and other British cars there..Taking my camera when I go back to pick it up..

He's got the box now and is rebuilding it for me.. Should be ready Monday or Tuesday... I took it to him drop arm and all...

$250.00 for the rebuild... I think that's a fair price...
