Engine Fan Very Loud - Louder & Higher at High RPM's

Driving home from a semi long road trip yesterday - climbing a hill - downshift to 4th and feel a bump/thud/snap type of sound. Then all of a sudden I hear my engine fan sound very loud.
Dumb question: did a piece of your fan shroud come off? Could have been the "bump/thud/snap," followed by a louder fan because the shroud acts like a sound baffle.
Just a theory.
