Engine trouble
Hello all,
Today while taking a ride through N GA, I noticed my truck laboring very hard going up mountain roads. I've only had it 3 weeks, so I wasn't sure if this was normal and the truck is just under powered, or if something was amiss. There also was some very heavy shaking in the stick when we first started ascending the mountain roads.
Shortly thereafter the Check Engine Light came on, and within a 1/2 mile almost all engine power was lost. The truck will shift into gear, and the engine revs but very little power is transmitted to the wheels.
I had it towed into town and found a shop that was open at 6pm on a Saturday. After driving it around the parking lot, the shop owner asked me about the fuel filter (replaced 2 weeks ago). He then threw the code reader on it and found the following:
P1204 Injector 4 Open Circuit or Ground Short Fault
P0204 Injector 4 Circuit Fault
P0304 Misfire Cylinder 4
P1316 Misfire Excessive Emissions Fault
I replaced the plugs a week ago. I left in the wires (8mm magnacores in good condition)
As it was late, he told me he would look at it tomorrow and have some answers for me by Monday.
Anyone have any ideas what I might be facing here?
Thanks

The fuel injector wiring harness feeds 12 volts positive to all injectors at the same time. The ECU connects the earth (ground) to trigger the injectors to squirt fuel. Could have electrical problems, injector problem, ECU problem with water ingress if you have been wading or high water (it lives in a plastic box under hood over by wiper fluid container). I would believe that 304 and 1316 are "results" of the injector problem.
Attached is page from the RAVE shop manual, you can also download the whole thing for free. Not sure what mechanic will have available. Fuse 7 under the hood is switched on by the multifunction relay (small box on passenger fender wall midway back from battery and shock tower); that 12 volts goes thru Brown with Orange wires to each injector, then the ground side of each injector runs to the ECU. The ECU grounds them as needed to squirt. The injectors have a value of 16.2 ohms resistance.
You could have a "rub" where insulation has worn through and is touching the engine block, or a bad connection. I'd start by unplugging the injector for #4 cylinder, or being sure it is plugged in all the way, the injector coil could be bad as well. Truck should run with 7 cylinders.
Note - having the RAVE on a USB drive in the glove box is a good thing.

Why not replace #4 ($100 at Atlantic British, perhaps less if you shop around), you take loose the two fuel lines at passenger side rear and buy your own can of Chemtool carb spray and squirt thru there, and change your fuel filter under passenger side rear tire. That fuel filter is the size of a beer can. $15.
I don't think an electrical problem with one injector supports all these other items, but I'm not there.
Will truck crank and run with injector 4 unplugged?

Well, depends on how DIY you want to be. See RovahFarm for all your new Land Rover Parts and Accessories as one source of new parts, about $66 for an injector. I can't say that we get a lot of posts about "all my injectors went bad". Maybe have him replace just the one, and see how things go.
Some guys maintain their Rover with open checkbook, others would regard a surprise $700 expense as reason to take it to the boneyard.
If you have to limp truck along without an injector plugged in, unplug that spark plug as well, drive modestly.
