Faulty OBDII Port
Hi Everyone,
So I’m a relatively new '96 discovery owner and have found a wealth of knowledge on this forum. It's already helped me out a lot with getting my discovery up to scratch and to the point I’m happy to do some trails and longer trips in it. So thanks for that.
So my Ultra Gauge arrived the other day and I was pretty excited to hook it up and see what it can do. With ignition on I plug it in and it begins to scan for the protocol…. But nothing happens….
I’ve read through the manual and understand the process; my UG works in my other vehicles no problem.
I’ve tried resetting the UG to factory defaults, forcing it to use the 9141 protocol but still no luck.
Today I pulled off the cover below the steering column to make sure there were no damaged wires etc. I also checked all of the fuses (didn’t think this would be the case but just thought I’d cover that).
I saw another post on here about someone with an OBD port not working as it should as well, but it didn’t really explain much to me.
Can anyone help me with troubleshooting this issue? I guess it’s time to get the multimeter out and study the Electrical Troubleshooting Manual…

Here's wiring from RAVE - be sure to check the F3 fuse shown again on the Satellite Box 2. You can meter for 12 volts to ground at the OBDII connector, but try using the connector ground to be sure that is OK as well.
Thanks Savannah,
I have just come in from checking the OBD connector. Fuse F3 on satellite 2 is OK. Yes I have tested the grounds on the OBD connector itself and they seem to be OK also.
Here are my results from the multimeter for each pin corresponding with the pin out in the RAVE:
1. Blank
2. Blank
3. Blank
4. Earth/Ground – Always On [Black Wire]
5. Earth/Ground – Always On [Black Wire]
6. Blank
7. +7.53v – Ignition On (+8.20v engine running) [Pink with Red Stripe]
8. +11.40v – Always On (+13v engine running) [Pink with Red Stripe]
9. Blank
10. Blank
11. Blank
12. Blank
13. Earth/Ground – Only when Ignition On [Yellow with Pink Stripe]
14. DEAD - [Yellow with Green Stripe]
15. +10.78v – Ignition On (+12.56v engine running) [Green with Red Stripe]
16. +12v – Always On (+14.02v engine running) [White with Red Stripe]
Can you spot anything out of the ordinary here? Is pin 14 the culprit? Pin 7 and 15 have something spliced into them further up – is this normal?
Thanks for your help.

Being a 1996 could i have the 14CUX and not the GEMS? How can i confirm this?
Is that correct or am i barking up the wrong tree?
If it is a 14CUX then it's not OBDII compatable.... then why would i have an OBDII port?

14 - yellow/lightgreen - is air bag module, you can't read that anyway.
16 - 12 volt battery power thru fuse 10
4 & 5 = ground
7 - the data that will be read and displayed
other pins go to other modules. Basically ground, power , and pin 7.
If the Ultra Gauge is not working, try on another car, or take Rover by parts store for a free code read (if they do that in your country - some places in the US are allowed to read, but not clear codes).
Sheet attached that shows difference of MAF sensor for 14CUX vs GEMS... GEMS has ECU on fenderwall under bonnet.

Hi Savannah,
Thanks for you time again. Yeah the UltraGauge definately works in other vehicles.
According to that PDF you provided me, i have a 14CUX. Also, there is no ECU on the fender wall.
And according to this: Lucas 14CUX - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Means the Ultra Gauge will not work anyway.
"The design of the 14CUX was done well in advance of the requirement (for the 1996 model year) that all passenger vehicles sold in the United States support OBD-II. As a result, the diagnostics information collected by the 14CUX is not accessible via an OBD-II-compliant interface"
Should have done my homework before getting the UG. Oh well.
