Default Front End Clunk When Turning

I have a 1996 Land Rover Discovery SE7 that I'm having some issues with.

The first issue is a HARD clunk when I turn left or right. This is intermittent and doesn't do it every time. It will definitely get your attention when it does it though. It scared the crap out of me the first time it did it ! The vehicle runs down the road fine. No shake, no shimmy, straight as an arrow, doesn't pull to one side or the other. It just has this clunk. A good example is driving through a parking lot at low speed looking for a parking space, then turning into the space from a straight path. It will clunk HARD about half way through the turn. Other than that there are no indicators that anything is wrong.... ????

The other issue that just started after a 2 degree cold night is a rough starting, and a loss of power at highway speeds. It will be running 70 mph and then just cut out and lose power. It will pick back up then maybe do it again during the drive. I'm thinking maybe a throttle position sensor or a speed sensor..... ????

Does anyone know of a video or manual that describes replacing the rotors on the front and rear of this vehicle ?

Where can this RAVE manual be found that I read about ?

Last but not least, does anyone know of a good, honest, reasonably priced Land Rover mechanic in central Indiana ? I'm located in Greencastle, Indiana 46135. I'm about the half way point between Indianapolis and Terre Haute, just off I-70. I'm willing to drive a reasonable distance. Hell, I'd even drive an unreasonable distance if I had to !

Thanks !
Fred

landroverresource.com is the Rave (service manual). You can either do the 590mb file which is all Rovers up to about 2005 or just the Disco 1 manual.

The thunk might be your axle shifting from worn panhard bar bushings or the swivel pins/bearings or CV's. You'll have to take a closer look on that. Have someone else turn it and watch. (Not easy, I know....).

Can't say anything about Rover dealers or independent garages, have to call around. Usually independent euro import garages deal with Rovers. PT Schram is the only guy listed near you but don't know if he's still doing business although he may recommend someone for you. Give em a shout.

The VSS is probably the cut out at speed, not a cheap part either but there is a write up on repairing it in the "Tech Section".

Rovahfarm.com is where most of us grab parts from, there's also Atlantic British (roverparts.com) which is usually more expensive but they have a larger range of parts in their inventory.

Here is another, less cumbersome source of the workshop manual (wmlj97e), the electrical troubleshooting manual etlj97.
