Abran, use to work in boat supply store. See if they have stainless one that will work for you. Usually tempered to higher stress values and won't rust if solid stainless! Just food for thought brother. Chuck

Hey Chuck,

Could be a cool upgrade! Then I can triple chrome plate the whole linkage! My Disco is going to be looking like a garage queen at that rate.

Thanks for the tip.

So got into it today again. Drilled the rivets out for the grand shifter lifted it out of the way and f-n-a it was like the clouds parted and a davinci-esqué sunbeam shown down from the firmament into the cab of my truck! With the divine hosts chorusing I tore it down with room to spare and snatched the shifter and linkages out like it was child's play.

All I could think of was that scene in train spotting where ewan macgregor dives into the bar toilet after his lost suppositories and finds them at the bottom of the sea. F-in mmfuytfvgfggtrxxxx!!!! He says all bubbles rushing to the surface. Well I said the same darned thing, whatever it was. Not really a mainstream movie but if you saw it and liked it yer my kind of peeps.

Anyhoo, thanks again for the tips, happy New Years to you and you families and may 2014 bring pleasant wheeling and ever increasing gas mileage.

Now if you will excuse me gonna go get sloshed and play in the third annual geek family monopoly tourney with the kids. This is my year (I almost always lose) I can feel it...

Peace

Ok so impending snowstorm forced me to revisit my transfer case shifter. When I looked at the fulcrum stud, it appeared that it might be a piece of threaded rod screwed into the end with the aperture. After several goes with the torch and stud remover, this appeared not to be the case.

So I ground off the threaded part and decided to make an attempt at drilling and tapping the remaining end. I used four successively sized drillbits, starting with 1/8 of an inch, and ending with 17/64, the proper hole size for an M8 1.25 tap. It is a little off Center, but close enough for government work in this case. Not bad for a handrill, sans drillpress, I'm rather proud of myself. Off to the local big box store for some threaded rod, and it was done.

Here is the finished product:

Now the little pedestal that this screws into does not have threads all the way through although there was a through hole. I didn't want to mess with tapping it all the way through so I back drilled a quarter inch hole in the non-threaded part so the rod would screw all the way through. I wanted to put a nut on both sides to increase support as the threads were a little sloppy.

The result:

Ooola, baby.

So I rigged it all back together, with a few miscues. The edge of the groove on the nylon cup basically fell apart as I tried to put the circlip back on. Did I mention that I hates circlips? So I put a little hose clamp around the shaft of the shifter above the spring loaded ball that sits inside of the nylon cup. Not great, but it works quite well and now I have my 4wheel groove back.

And post snowstorm, I am now fully reaware of why it is I drag all these extra hunks of metal around and pay for all that gas the rest of the year.
