So you did get a new amp to run everything and rewire it all?

I don't need anything extravagant but would like to upgrade the receiver to something with bluetooth or some other aux input.

Nope. The factory amp does a reasonably good job when supported by an upgraded amp to drive the subs.

I extended the existing wiring (power and audio signal) on the rear door and put the amp to drive the subs in the door pocket next to the speakers.

If your CD changer powers up (doesn't need to function), you can tap the audio lines to the head unit to install an aux input. After tapping those lines I wound up with a project box in my center cubby which has two USB power slots and RCA audio inputs. Now a single cord emerges from my center cubby to which I can connect my phone and rock on down the road.

There is a write up in the electronics section. Feel free to ask more questions.

And then there is this plug and play solution...

Thanks Walt.

I actually don't have a CD player of any sort in my Disco which is another reason I was looking to upgrade. So it looks like I would get a new receiver and use the existing wiring, but would get an additional amp to power the replaced subs in the back?

Again, not looking for anything earth shattering but I do desire a 'fuller' sound.

Thanks again for the help and if any of this is redundant or plain out dumb I apologize, I'm very new to it all.
