Help with belts/cables/hoses
- Your radiator is fine. We would have done something about that before you left Colorado if it wasnt.
- The heater hoses could be done as a precaution. They carry the hot water to the heater under your dash. I dont recall them specifically on your Lordy but you could probably just use bulk hose. Maybe someone could chime in with the correct size. Probably 5/8 ID. Any parts store would have it. Or get the preformed hoses from AB or your local dealer, or whoever else these fine Rover-(ers?) recommend. If they fail you will be stranded, and they have likely been on for as long as your radiator hoses.
- I would recommend flushing but that may make a mess in places you dont want to make a mess. I am confident the previous owner took care of the truck though. Regular drains and refills annually should take care of any need to flush. Dont forget you need a couple gallons of antifreeze. Check the internets or these fine Rover-(ers?) for how much you need. And dont use tap water... buy a couple gallons of distilled, filter your tap water, or buy 50/50 premixed.
- When youre refilling the coolant turn the heater on full hot so you dont get air bubbles in the heater core. Check on burping procedures for your Lordy... nearly every vehicle is different, so I couldnt tell you from here how to do it.
- Check your idler pulley(s) and tensioner since youre replacing the belt. Those wont leave you stranded, they will likely just wear your new belt faster and make noise. So you can skip them with your usual frustrated minimalist philosophy.
But check the belt for wear. Does it look rubbed, smooth...like it was dragging on a bad belt pulley? Or just dry and cracked with age? Does the tensioner still put tension on the belt? Not sure how much tension it should apply, but some is better than none in this case I think. - And use the t-stat you already have. Im sure a chevy 350 tstat with holes drilled in it works just fine. But you probably dont have a drill, and you already have a tstat thats not worth returning.
Give me a month off rent and I will fly out there next week and do the work for you, Im off anyway.

You should replace those crappy axles with some good Toyota's tho... While youre in there.

2.5 hours in I have replaced the hood release cable and learned a couple of valuable lessons about replacing the serpentine belt (which has not been replaced yet).
- Apparently I have never worked on a vehicle with a belt tensioner before.
- Belt tensioners do not like me, and I do not like them.
- You have to remove either the fan pulley or the lower engine pulley (whatever it is called) to get the belt on and off.
- I probably should have referenced the RAVE before jumping in. Apparently "extremely straightforward" assumes more basic car knowledge than I have.
- My perfect streak of drawing blood every time I have ever worked on a vehicle remains intact.
Tonight I will consult the RAVE manual, and then try again tomorrow. Maybe things will go as they should this time and I can do the belt, hoses, and expansion tank all in one day.
