Wink How to repair burned out dash switch lights

I had a few dash switch lights out in my D1 (rear window defog, fog lights, CC) and found it annoying that I couldn't see the switches at night or determine if the relayed functions were on (like the rear window defogger) so I pulled the switch apart and found a easy way to repair them. Didn't see this info on the web so thought I'd share this simple repair.

Pop the switch out of the dash and unplug it. On the underside of the switch are 2 light bayonet mounts; they can be removed with a flathead- unscrew a 1/4 turn and pop or shake out.

These look like LEDs but are in fact tiny incandescent 12V bulbs covered with a silicone boot to color them. The bulb spec is #7219 and they can be ordered from McMaster or eBay or Amazon. 10 bulbs cost $5.

The wires are just wrapped around the plastic bayonet, which you'll reuse- use an Xacto or pick to untwist them from the mount and pull the bulb out.

Carefully peel off the silicone boot. You can reuse the stock green and orange colors or buy replacement boots in whatever color you wish.

Put the boot on the bulb, then feed the lead wires though the bayonet mount and wrap them around the base to make contacts. Clip off the excess.

Reinstall in the switch and you're good to go!

Clay-

I wanted to also replace them with LEDs but one would have to file down the "foot" on a 3mm LED to fit the bayonet, which has an ID of just over 3mm. Maybe you could squeeze them in; I figured the lifespan of the #7219 is probably longer than most of the rest of the truck. Also note the lead spacing on the LEDs is wider than the #7219s, you may run into fit issues there. Again, probably doable with some futzing, but the bulbs are plug-and-play.

When I found the incandescent bulbs, I figured that was the easier move.

Good find! You mean you don't like paying $4.00 each for the STC1878 lamps

Haha I didn't even know they were available separately. Haynes manual say "the lights are part of the switch and not available apart from it, one must replace entire switch assembly"

First you have the wrong Haynes Manual.. you need this

The price really is stupid for a replacement lamp with base and cover for either the green or orange (STC1877). The 7219 also comes in colors if you lose the cap. But you can just buy a new green or orange cap as well.

I'm sure there are better prices, but here is an example>>

OverRover I need that manual ahaha!

I think you could just dab a bit of paint on the bulb in a fix too. The boots are kinda pricy- I considered going to a blue/green theme but then decided it would be frivolous when there are so many other things to fix.

I agree $6.00 for 5 covers is too high. But if you had to have a cover it's just a 3mm, and a quick ebay search has 10 for $5.33 > 3mm Green Silicon LED Light Bulb Cap Cover (10pcs) by The Toyz TOYZ 225 Green | eBay

I'm sure these can be had for far less and in other colors, but the same ebay store has red, green, yellow, and blue > Great deals from THE TOYZ | eBay stores
