IMHO 40 W single would be better, the shop manual says 10W30 is only good to 95F, so why would single weight 30 do better? And if it is the valve train making the racket, won't you hear that reallly good with a stick before cover removed? Just sneak and borrow one of SWMBO's spares. Agree with isolate, tear down, and clean and repair. You can run engine with valve cover off, it is not that messy. Then you can also push down on suspect items with a stick to see if noise changes.

Unzip it. You'll not be guessing with the valve covers on anymore. You'll have the low down on the top ends condition. Tear it down, clean, find out. That's how it gets done by real mechanics.

You did a big job on that interior floor pan and such, lot bigger metal, these parts don't weigh nothing, you'll do great. Use plastic zip lock bags to keep small parts in and take lots of pix as you take it apart and put it back together. Just try to work where you are blocked from seeing the beach and the bikini/thong parade, might drop a socket in the wrong place. Also account for every tool before closing up.

Two tips I would like to contribute that I have used and found very helpful...
1. Print the pertinent sections so you can have it for quick reference as you work. Make notes, highlight, checklist or whatever. i even dated ad initial and keep as a record of what I did for future ref.
2.Get one (or more) of those magnetic retrieval tools just in case a small part or socket or whatever falls into a place you cannot reach.
And of course, do not forget appropriate recogniton of the Rover Gods before, during, and immediately after doing any work on the Rover. You do not want to anger them!

Why of course and the fire to keep it going late into the nite.
That is my idea of a Disco Clubhouse: A place to go to to fix your Disco and have fun doing it.
I got the idea from a Roadhouse in Ohio that had topless outdoor volleyball and a big slip'n'slide will lots of good old fashion suntan oil not sunblock..
