Default Intermittent Wiper and Dome Light Issue

Hello all,

My rovers intermittent wipers and dome light do not work. The dome light turns on and off but does not activate when the doors are unlocked or opened. I have read a thread that they are related and that there is some "box" that controls these items that need to be replaced. the wipers do return to the start position when turned off. The rear wipers, rear defrost and rear assist light do not work either. I am hoping they are controled by the same thing. Any help is greatly appreciated! John

It is called the MFU, or multi-function unit, size of a pack of smokes, mounted on back side of fuse panel under the dash. It controls short time intervals for lots of things. I snagged one out of a donor vehicle. You could also try a dismantler. IMHO a swap to LED lights inside will extend life of this device (it dims the light on exit).

I bought a fuse panel with the MFU attached off eBay for around $45. It has to be the issue. I had no idea how many functions are times on the rig. Thanks guys.

Look at https://landroverforums.com/forum/di...problem-40965/ - check the side of you model to be sure there is not a hole melted in your plastic. LED interior lights really help cut down on this. Diag list from the RAVE:

Diagnostic Procedure
1. Close all doors and the tailgate.
NOTE: If the oil pressure switch goes open circuit
(engine is started) during the following procedure,
the MFU will exit the diagnostic mode immediately.
2. Press and hold the heated rear screen switch
and switch on the ignition.
3. Release the heated rear screen switch within 2
seconds and the MFU will beep to indicate that it’s in
diagnostic mode 1.
4. Press the heated rear screen switch; the MFU
will beep twice. In turn, operate each of the following
switches, heated front screen, rear fog guard lamps,
side lights, headlights, front wiper and rear wiper.
The MFU will beep twice each time a switch is operated.
5. Pressing the heated rear screen again will cause
the MFU to enter diagnostic mode 2.
6. The MFU will provide outputs to the following in
order given below:

Heated rear screen relay energised for 2 seconds

Heated front screen energised for 2 seconds

Courtesy lights energised for 2 seconds

Dim dip relay energised for 2 seconds

Rear fog guard lamp energised for 2 seconds

Headlamp power wash energised for half a second

Front wiper energised for half a second

Rear wipe/wash energised for half a second

7. The MFU will then exit the diagnostic mode.

They are not related. The park issue is because of a sun gear with embedded contacts which has a riveted plate covering it on the wiper motor assembly. In days gone by the suggestion was to replace the wiper motor. I took mine apart since I'm not going to waste what I have. Nylon gear with copper contacts. The nylon gear will be pitted from arcing as the motor contact steps onto or off of the copper contacts embedded in the gear. Fill pits with Super-glue and remove melted nylon from slip contact and wipers will now park. Arcing is a problem with these trucks and switches.......

Check to make sure the door button switches aren't sticking, shoot them with a lube type contact cleaner. There is a MFU cycle check in the Rave, it goes through a pretty decent amount of checks. Check your dome light switch too, the position for the light to come on with the door open. Clean it.
