Heya folks,

This has been a problem for a while, but it's finally starting to worry and annoy me. Someone told me "I had a Disco, that's just how they are." I think he was a bit nutty.

With my hand at 12 o'clock on the steering wheel, I can move between 11 and 1 before the wheels turn. It otherwise turns fine, but slight adjustments on the highway make me look like I'm driving in a made for TV movie where the driver is moving the steering wheel back and forth vigorously while driving in a straight line.

Is this just how Discos are? If not, what are the possible problems?

No way. Mine is tight as a ....

Steering box? Tighten bolt on top. Wait for Savannah to wake up.

 

see attached. Or look in your own copy of the RAVE under "steering". Adjusting the nut works wonders and can keep you going, eventually box will need rebuild or replace, depending on how many rocks and potholes are in your path.

 

Only adjust the steering gear box after you have visually checked each tie rod end and bushing to make sure you don't have one of the more common steering wear failures.
If you do tighten the gear box, do not over tighten it or it will fail in the near future.

Get a buddy to sit in the cab and turn the wheel l/r to take up the slop. Get underneath and inspect all the ball joints and steering components. Get your hands on the joints. You wil be able to "feel" them better than see them.

If they are tight (or not even moving) trace the steering components back to the steering box. If you see the wheel moving back and forth but the steering components are not working, then it can be your steering box.

You might be able to tighten it up....

Search Youtube for Wheeler Dealers Land Rover Discovery. I remember them doing a steering box swap and inspected the steering components.
