Must I remove the driver window regulator to replace the window?
My 98 D1 driver's window was shattered into a million little glass bits and I have a used replacement to put in. I've removed the outside mirror and lowered the window regulator and removed the two 8 mm bolts holding the bottom metal piece from the bottom of the old window to the regulator and slipped it up above the plastic tab in the center of the regulator slide and out the front hole of the door. The manual's instructions say the window should be fully closed and to remove the regulator before removing the window frame, but I’m not sure this is necessary.
Can I remove the driver's side window frame from the door with the regulator in place? Add if so can I put the "new" window in the frame and install it with the regulator still in place? Anyone done this before? I did not find any You Tube videos so any reference would be helpful.
Edit: I went ahead and removed the window frame and I was able to reinstall it with the window in it held up with straps. One hiccup was that a wire lead at the back of the door went inside the back leg of the frame and the window hung up on it and would not go all the way down, but I was able to disconnect the wires at a connector just behind the door lock and re-route it around the back of the frame without having to pull the frame out again. I did not have to remove the regulator or motor and the window slid down to the regulator bar to be bolted to it once the wires were out of the way.
