My D1 Diesel swap adventure!
#22
I own a 94 chevy truck with the 6.5 turbo diesel. One of the reasons I bought it was for the prospect of swapping it into the Land Rover I had at the time. As an owner I love this engine. It's brutally simple. It's reliable. And it gets great mileage at about 22mpg if I drive nice. Since mine is a turbo it does move somewhat. I won't be winning any drag races any time soon. The 94 up version has an electronic fuel control module mounted on the injection pump. Freaking brilliant. They overheated all the time ending in complete failure. The harmonic balancers are crap. Not changing it can lead to crank snapped. Also if you neglect the little frame mounted fuel pump, the injection pump does all the work. Ending in a premature failure.
I had an 82 K20. With the normally aspirated version and no PMD module. It was slow but dead on reliable plus 18mpg.
I think this is an excellent swap. I'm a huge fan of this motor. They got a bad rep from a few very easily fixed problems. Just like the Land Rover. In my opinion the worst part of a Land Rover is the electronics/engine managment system and the expensive sensitive engine. This swap would eliminate most of the problems with these trucks. I do wonder how incorperating the gauges is going to go.
The rigs I read about used a custom 6 core radiator and remote mounted trans cooler. They used Rover end tanks and a custom core. They had to use 3 electric fans due to the lack of clearence w the thicker radiator.
I will be following your thread. Keep up the great work.
