please let me know how to check the brake lights for this land rover, I have checked both bulbs and they are in good condition. there is no supply to the rear brake light and how do i check to have this problem solved.

 

Brake light switch at pedal voltage?

 

You need to replace the brake light switch.
First buy one.

YOU CAN ONLY DO THIS WITH THE ENGINE OFF.

The brake light switch also controls the ABS as the switch is compound.

Pull down the panel - use two money quarters to open it.
Then you remove the other stuff blocking access.
The switch is hard to get off - there is a trick to it.
Can't remember.

BUT NEVER start the truck with this switch off or disconnected.
You'll then not have ABS.

Trust me.

There are two switches on the brake pedal of my 98, one above the other. The brake light switch is the upper one - the lower one (the one you will see first) is for the cruise control and has a vacuum line on it (if I remember correctly).

I seem to remember someone saying you can check the brake lamps themselves by jumping the two tabs on the back glass and turning on the rear window defrost.

BTW, my 98 had a bad brake light switch when I bought it and I put on a new one, but I still have ABS only about half the time. (grin)

 

If the brake light switch is bad, on an automatic trans truck, you will not be able to get out of park. Been there.
When getting a new switch, be aware there are 2 different switches, an auto trans and a manual trans one. they have a different connector for each one. When I went to get mine, the parts supply store had the wrong one listed for my D1 auto the picture showed the manual trans one.

 

I didn't know there were two different brake light switches when I replaced the bad one that came on my 98, but the connector fit so I guess it was the right one. Before that I could shift from park - I just didn't have brake lights.

There is a black wire and a red wire on the shifter switch side of the shifter switch connector that are cut and taped off; Might these be what used to feed the key lock solenoid from the shifter switch?

 

I think I found it in the electrical troubleshooting manual - Apparently the black and red wires go to a solenoid on the shifter that locks it in park.


Hard to believe someone went to the trouble to cut these wires instead of just replacing a $20 brake light switch. I might try re-connecting them to see what happens when I pull the shifter again to install my new CDL switch when it comes. If it works, OK and if it doesn't I can clip them again.
