Default Oil leak from oil filter

I know I know..."it's a Land Rover, if it's not leaking it's empty."

So it's been a while since I've posted. '96 D1...Terrafirma HD coils and shocks.

Full engine reseal and hg's perfomed about 18 months ago by British 4x4 in Aurora, CO. Since I've moved from the most awesome state of Colorado to the not so awesome state of Texas.

It's running really well except for a leak at the oil filter. I've confirmed (with my own eye and local non-Rover mechanic (he's a classic Buick guy if that helps any)) that the leak is at the filter. Oil pressure switch is good (no leaks) and the various pressure sensors near the filter are good as well. New oil cooler lines, etc.

What are my options...I've used: Mobile, Wix, Napa and currently a Fram....

Should I try switching to the long Mobile filter in hopes that it would alleviate some additional pressure in that area?

To give you guys an idea of how much it leaks...probably 1/8 of a quart over a couple of hundred miles. It's really more of an annoyance than anything. Just looking for options outside of replacing the timing cover. Also, it's no longer my daily driver, and doesn't leak outside of this.

As always, you guys know this way better than I do...

? Do your eyes tell where leaking?

If filter gasket leaking inspect mating surface and try using more than limp wrist when installing filter.

Mating surface is pretty clean - I've cranked down the filter a few different times and it's still leaking. Trying to get additional opinions as I'm stumped.

Next step will be to go to North Texas British and let them inspect it.

it.
See you tried several filters which should eliminated it being a rare bad filter gasket.

Your timing cover may have a small crack in the vicinity of filter mount if all other sources eliminated. Crack or seal leak at filter should be detectable with a very thorough cleaning and careful visual inspection using a bright light and inspection mirror. Not a glamorous option, if incline to do your own inspection it may save you the time and expense of a trip to the shop & have them determine the same.

I found your post: https://landroverforums.com/forum/di...k-66562/page2/

I'll check that one this weekend...I need to reseal a hub. I'll just add this to the list.

Also, check to make sure the pressure relief cap is not leaking. Not sure you know the snap ring on the cap can be removed. The cap has a rubber o ring on it that fails sometimes. With the engine running, use a mirror to investigate by the snap ring. Use some carb cleaner or brake clean to get a good look of the location of the leak.

An Overview Of Land Rover Front Engine Covers

Here is a video at about 1:30, you can the snap ring over the cap (just below the pressure sensor).

I hate reference other forums but this may help too.
