I had this happen on a '96 DI. Check your crankshaft seal.


Even if there is a slight leak the oil will pool behind the lip of the crankshaft pulley. Oil will fling on the front cover, sender, and especially drip down the oil filter.


Just put your finger on the back of the pulley you'll find the oil.

 

Found my leak, there is a small disc held in with a snap ring just above the oil filter by the oil line

Anyone know what it is what's behind it? O ring? Would like to know before removing the oil line to access it

 

If we are talking about the same thing, it's the pressure relief valve. Spring loaded.

I think there is an o-ring on that plug held in by the snap ring. I think. Maybe.

 

Guess I need to fix that

 

Don't misplace the guts. Parts aren't available separately. So I hear.

 

Hoping oil leak fixed! o ring was shrunk and brittle pain to do, changed o rings on the oil line I had to remove since I had it off

This was a bitch to get back in, insert spring, install cap then pushed cap in and wedged a pair of 3/8" ratchet extensions (6" + 3") between cap and frame to force cap in then it stayed by itself while I reinstalled the snap ring

Used green o rings cause I had em

In bottom pic hole on left is pressure relief, hole on right oil line pic is rotated about 90* counter clockwise

 

my truck is leaking from around the same area, i'm gonna be doing the same looking around that you did.

 

Tom, is your leak gone now? I have similar leak that looks like it is dripping down from the oil filter. I put the dye in the oil to see the source with the blacklight - will be checking it out.
