Default Overheating // 98 Discovery I LE

Hi guys,

I just purchased a ’98 Land Rover Discovery LE with 134K miles from a private individual. One hour after purchase while driving back to my house it overheated. Nightmare. I was in the highway for about 40min and 20min in stop and go traffic, it overheated, shut off and started leaking coolant. I had it towed to a mechanic as I was paranoid and did not want to do any additional damage (not sure if I had done any at that time). He said I needed a new water pump, and new thermostat. I asked him to do a full oil change, and flush to clean the system. I will also note that I had the AC on high the entire time (even though) the AC does blow cold air. I have heard that sometimes the AC can push the engine over the top, causing it to overheat,

The mechanic said he did not believe there was any engine damage as he pressure tested the engine.

One thing that bothers me here is that the mechanic said he would start with these repairs and go from there. Total cost is about $900 including tow (fortunately was only ¼ mile from mechanic.) I fear is that after all this has been replaced and $$ spent, the problem will not be addressed and I will have to allocate more funds to this. Thoughts?

Thanks so much for the help guys. This is my first LR and I am already obsessed. Trying to learn as much as I can as quickly as I can so I can start adding some value here.
