p1179 woes
I threw p1179 last week on a 1997 D1.
WHAT I HAVE DONE: Ran Lucas through it.
I replaced the fuel pump -- really this was just wishful thinking based on ONE POST, and didn't help.
I replaced the MAF because ha ha! While I was checking and cleaning the MAF, a piece broke off the bottom; it may have been cracked there. Replacing didn't help. (DID confuse my indie, because while bad MAF was back on truck, it misfired. Now every time I try to discuss with him, he says, "well, it was misfiring..." and I have to remind him of the MAF break-and-fix, and he gets super confused. This conversation will go in circles as long as I allow it so he's little help right now.)
Replaced fuel filter, because it needed it.
Replaced air filter with K&N.
I am waiting for an ipad-compatible code reader to arrive. My old Droid code reader wasn't working, which cost a couple days while I powered up ALL my old Droid devices and tried to get it working. Used someone else's Droid, finally, and the device wouldn't mount.
p1179 came on, hasn't gone away. I have the following qs:
- It's showing a p1179. Would it clear the CEL if I had fixed the issue, or must that code be manually cleared?
- Would the mix run less lean if I had fixed the issue, or would it stay a lean mix until I cleared the code?
- Is the mechanical condition determining the mix with a code displaying, or is the ECU determining the mix?
(I hope you understand this Q )
- Would misfiring cylinder while the MAF was offline dump gas into the oil? I feel as though I smell a little gas in the oil. Obvs I am thinking fuel injector. None visibly leaking. But does gas in oil ALWAYS mean fuel injector, or does a bit of gas get dumped when cylinders misfire? (as they did when MAF plug was pulled while figuring out I'd broken the MAF and then not again)
- WTH.
AFTER all of the above fixes:
It turned over cold this morning after providing fuel pressure by key cycling twice. It then died, as it has been, when it began idle. White smoke. Got it running and warm, power feels fine, idles at 750 evenly, goes above 3000 rpms when goosed, didn't stall. Idles pretty beautifully and feels like it's running fine, but consistently hard starting since the MAF screw up. I feel like fuel hesitates a little from the pedal.
Does any of this rule OUT anything or IN anything?
Suspected culprits:
1. I've already fixed it but need to clear codes for it to take effect.
2. Fuel injector
3. 02 sensor
4. CPS
5. Plugs and wires
6. IAC (cannot for the life of me find to clean).
Remember, I am a dumb girl. I spent a lot of this week covered in fuel and tears. And carbon.

Might want to invest in an Ultragauge. Mighty handy. I picked up an EM Plus.

You know, I am not messing with the MAF right now. Having checked it, broken it and replaced it, I think it's best to leave it alone. It's literally days old at this point, so I don't think I need to clean it.
