Default Peculiar Overheat Question...

I am experiencing a strange overheat issue in my 96 D1. The Trans shift stick becomes extremely hot after 10-20 miles or so. I am assuming that this indicates an overheating Trans and/or transfer case. I have checked the fluid in both multiple times. I have even gone so far as to try the Lucas trans fluid additive. (I can't tell for sure if this helped at all... it seems to have smoothed out the shift btw fwd & reverse, but didn't really stop the heat). Additionally, after a good run, you can smell a hot fluid scent quite easily from under the truck. At this time I have no codes referring to the transmission in any way.
( I have been getting a P0103, but I have a new o2 sensor that should take care of that).

I am unsure whether the PO did the trans filter service. I Remember he said he did it but...

should I acquire an infrared thermometer to measure the surface temps in question?

Any theories would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Chris

The trans will get pretty hot.It could be the P.O. Removed the insulation when freeing up
the 4x4 shifter.Pretty common.I would take a peak and see what you find.

There is a trans fluid heat warning switch on the metal line from tranny to radiator and cooler, kinda near the steering gear area. Might take connector off and short wires to see that warning light comes on. Is tranny still plumbed to the radiator and cooler?
