Default Piece of piston ring in plenum!!

Well, I heard a light, random " marble in the top end" noise, so pulled valve covers and plenum. Found a 1/4" piece of piston ring sitting in the bottom of the plenum and a few, small rounded ***** of aluminum. Drivers back cylinder spark plug electrode was closed - no contamination from sparking, where all the others had a well-due tan color... No scratches, gouges on electrode to verify ring smack, it could have been installed that way by PO - I had new ones waiting to go in...vacuum cleaner suck on each air horn grabbed nothing. Aww shucks!!

Anyway, with 220,000 it's probably due...

Oh, and did I mention, this was only a week after the fan blade came apart, destroyed the shroud - but only polished a few fins on the radiator.

But, hey, it's not like I'm gonna scrap it and buy a Je** or sumthin' !!! I'll be keeping things documented as I rebuild. Stay tuned!! Russ

Local wrecking yard has 2 engines - he's gonna verify mileage/history and let me know - but $400 for an engine.

Also, for an FYI - PO's son is a Land Rover tech in SLC area and had sold him on using Mobil 50,000 oil (and changed every 2,000 miles)but after seeing the crud in valve covers, I'll be using something else! It always came out of the pan lookin' pretty, but iot looks like Penzoil up top!! Sorry, I let my opinion show - 40 years of selling auto parts does reveal some patterns though. Russ

the piston ring is likely from a slipped cylinder sleeve, sleeve slipped down and the piston ring expanded over top of it and the rest is history...personal experience>> "P0307...misfire cylinder 7" in my case

I hadn't looked that far into possibilities, I just realized overhauling is probably more than I can convince my wife is necessary... That makes sense though - are the sleeves shrink fit? I guess high miles would move the sleeves around a bit and loosen them? Russ

Your not in a great spot, my sympathies. What condition is the rest of the truck in?

OH, when I said no overhaul, I meant no engine rebuild - I WILL put a donor used engine in! I am brainwashed, I drank the Kool-aid - I AIN'T BUYING ANOTHER VEHICLE!!!
Sorry. Yeah I will repair, it's in good enough shape that she deserves it and short of a Defender dropping into my lap, I can't imagine anything better than my 96. It's got quirks, but I've learned enough and appreciate the repairability enough that I'm stuck Russ

I miss my 94 D1. It had quirks and was an early injection system with distributor but I liked it; manual seats and all. Had close to 300k on original engine and it could sit for months and still start up without issues. It just got to where it was looking like an eyesore with panels beat around and multiple layers of paint and bondo. It still lives on and is a dedicated trail truck for someone else.

Keep plugging away and repower it. Sounds like you are attached to it. I have had my D2 for a year now and have not established the bond with it like my D1.
