Finally found the washers at Ace Hardware in Jacksonville, Florida. They sell them individually, not in packages.
Had to trim the outer diameter down a little , it's put back together and I'll install it back in the Disco tomorrow, hopefully it works. I'll let you know.

I've put only about 100 miles on the vehicle so far, no problems. I did rub in some fiber bearing grease into the VSS before putting back together. Then I put the red gasket sealer around the edges (inside) and let dry overnight before reinstalling in the Disco.

I don't drive my Disco much, but today I went about ten miles and the VSS started acting up. It did that the whole 70 round trip, oft and on. Geeeee.

Default successful rebuild

Great write-up on refurbishing the VSS! It was easy to remove. Mine came apart by just using a screw driver to ply it apart. I got Nylon washers from Lowes. They were too thick. About double the thickness. I held one with a set of plyers and chopped it in half with my pocket knife. I used a bunch of Lithium Grease inside the VSS to lube everything well. I used plain old Super Glue to seal the VSS back together.

The hardest part was re-installing it. I had to contort my arm all sorts of crazy ways through the underbody to reach the screw. I was wearing a head flash light, but it was still a feat providing sufficient light. After about 45 minutes of unsuccessfully toiling with it I finally sank the screw and reconnected it.

Driving it now the needle is steady instead of shaky like it always was before. I haven't had the problem of the engine governor kicking in and killing acceleration, YET. I guess ill know if it worked if that ever happens again. My Ultraguage even gives a steady MPH readout now. It is about 5.5mph slower than my dash speedometer.

Thanks for your work and contribution to the community.

Because the previous owner of my truck sold it because of these types of complaints, I was very interested in the VSS. I bought one on Ebay to rip apart, and when I found how easy it was to work on, and what was wrong with it, I took the one out of my truck, did the same and documented it.

You can get the write up here:

My guess is that at this point, most of these trucks need this rebuild whether or not you've seen the symptoms.

I'll be revising this if I can find a more suitable part, and I'll update the thread if that happens.
Hi GPRTech, the link you provided doesn't seem to work. Can you please send me the instructions? Thanks!
