Any number of things can cause this... Man I've been chasing it since I got my Rover.. But I'm going completely thru mine...

Check the toe-in... That's really important.. But many things can cause the wobble..

Best to get it up on stands.. Then you can shake the front wheels around and see what moves the most... Fix that first.. Then keep working your way thru the suspension till you get it all replaced...That's what I'm doing on mine...

Tie rod ends... Wheel bearings. Swivel pins... Bad steering box.. Shocks. Bad alignment...

There are 6 tie rod end type of ball joints in the front and three in the rear.. So that's a lot of stuff to slop around... I'm counting the swaybar end links in that count... Mine are/were all worn out...I'm still in the middle of doing all them and all the bushings too..

Good Luck..

my 96 used to get the wobbles at highway speeds and especially when i'd hit a bump or pot hole. turns out a balance weight had broken off. balanced the tires and all was well.

But only 4 that affect steering.

Technically, That's not correct Tom.. While I agree the 4 tie rod ends are the majority of steering, Anything that moves around on the front end or rear end that shouldn't be moving around, Will cause a geometry change and a "steering input" that will move the truck one way or another.. So they all can influence steering indirectly by allowing an axle to shift in a way that it's not supposed to..

But you're right. It's unlikely that the sway bar end links would cause the death wobble by themselves...But they're all "enablers"..

Default Tie Rod Ends

I hope this isn't thread stealing, but I have been working to fix my death wobble, and I ordered two tie rod ends on-line. One said RH, the other said LH. When I went to install them I put the RH one on, no problem. Got the the left side and the tie rod end had LH threads and would not work. So I ordered another RH tie rod end and it fit fine. Now, these were the tie rod ends closest to the hub, on the straight bar that the steering damper connects to. I still have the LH threaded tie rod end. Does anybody know offhand where a LH thread tie rod end would go ? BTW, I think my death wobble was cured by removing a couple of shims from the swivel pins along with greasing and adjusting the front wheel bearings. It wasn't real hard, just a little time-consuming. TIA.
