Got my switch in today and installed - working perfectly! With nothing to lose, I disassembled the switch to see if it was a problem and/or rebuildable. I found that the center plunger is just held in by a coil spring grabbing serrations on the shaft - so just pull hard and it comes out allowing the guts to pull apart once you get past the 4 tabs around the base. Once inside, I found that it is cleanable in an emergency, but I found out that one side of mine had arced the points and melted one of the springs (small). So, I feel confident that I found the problem (I'm knocking on wood!) and now I'll move on to the next thing... Russ

Cool, one down, many to go....... These become very reliable once you swim through all the neglect.

I had this happen to me yesterday and found a few references to the paperclip trick from fishEH - worked like a charm! THANKS FISH - best hack yet! Genius!

Once you think about it, it makes perfect sense why it works. Seems pretty "unique" that the 3rd break light is powered through the traces on the glass, but it does make it very convenient to jumper.

A couple of pics of the aforementioned paperclip

Cargo door glass, passenger side, see other pic for blow up

paper clip jumps the two connectors - one is to the rear defroster traces, the other is to the 3rd brake light

While in the drivers seat push the Rear Defrost switch and you'll be able to shift out of Park.
