Question Slipping between gears

I am sure someone has already answered this along the way, if you would point the way, I would appreciate it very much so.

My '97 Disco quit staying in gear last summer one day when it was pretty Hot in Atlanta. After it cooled down, I got it to Marietta. It has been there a year. NOW, I am having issues again with it staying in gear and slipping between gear changes and taking a loooong time to get into gear after it has warmed up. I have checked the fluid, it was foul smelling and dark. I pulled the transmission plug and did a drain and refill. I have not yet installed a transmission filter (Don't know if it is worth it at this point). But, the fluid is currently fairly clean and up to the 2nd hole in transmission stick. It also, just started whinning in park, sounded to come from the transfer case??? It is in 2 wheel High. What woulf anyone suggest I do next? Dynamite??

Ps. I WILL NOT give up on this thing. Damn draining my pocket though

Thanks, David

Is it full with engine running trans in neutral?

I would check fluid level on that transfer case

You can try sea foam in trans drive till good and hot, let sit few days, service trans

This may clean the valve body and help

Someone may have a better idea

I jumped the gun.... Stranded in Alpharetta. I let vehicle sit overnight, drained some tranny fluid and put a quart of Lucas tranny fluid in and limped it home today. I will be dropping the Tranny pan and changing filter soon. It still has a whinning now. The whinning seems to come from just behind the engine.

When running, it stays in gear very well and doesn't slip BUT when it gets warmed up, a slipping we go

Whinning can be pump, its a the rear of engine, usually denotes low fluid, chance your trans cooler is clogged? Torque converter crapping out? Pump crapping out?
