So I cheated on my D1 with a 4 door Wrangler...I feel bad.
So the fam and I are in Kona, HI for the week and I rented a 4 door Wrangler. Can't say too many good things about it, did take it off the maintained road today through some really rough lava road to the beach, not bad, not good, considering people in Honda's were taking the same road.
Very homogenized, poor gas mileage, looks like every other one that people rent, nothing distinctive, nothing to write home about, do like that new car smell though. Will my D1 start when I get home, knowing I drove a Jeep?

It's a good alternative to a D1. I mean, what else is there with 4 seats plus cargo for offroad? A Landcruiser? A Trooper? It will be 10 years before a base Wrangler Unlimited comes in as low in price as D1's are now, but there is plenty of aftermarket support for it and will only be more in the future. What will a Roverhead do? Fix up a LR3 or 4? I can't believe a lot of people are going to do what it will take to restore a D1 by then or that the aftermarket will live long after the shrinking Discovery population dwindles down. No doubt the Series and Defender will go on in strength for quite a bit longer than the Defenders stay in production, but without a big Disco population, people are going to move on to something else.

I highly doubt that, these basterds keep their resale value like a Toyota. You can easily buy 2 running clean Discos for the price a a clean YJ will sell. I don't think their resale value will drop unless it becomes criminal to own a 4x4. That being said, interiors are so crappy, good luck to find a clean one in 10 years haha.
