The drain plug broke. Would explain why the undercarriage is so clean and shiny but ffs. 17mm socket, 1 turn with no effort and wheeee, all fluid came out. Then I pulled out what I thought was the drain plug, missing most of the thread around the magnet. Realized smthn ain't right. Took the rest out with a screwdriver and m pucker factor went to 10. Made a few calls, matched up the pitch and for 5 bucks have a replacement. LR dealer was 25 bucks and in wed. God love the parts store.

 

Well, ALL the fluid didn't come out, there is still quite a bit (50%) in the torque converter. So in a few days, repeat, and you will be down to 25% old fluid, maybe less due to continuous under body cleaning system.

So, if ATF cleans the under carriage.... you can imagine the attraction to clean engine innards. However, before the flak starts, consider that in Detroit, to accelerate wear on an engine being tested, they will use 100% ATF instead of oil, because it is so thin. The cleaning is more a function of lots of detergent and dispersents, etc. Shade tree mechanics use what's on hand, not what's on back order.... a pro will wait for the right stuff.
