Default Todays Discoveries HA

Ive been losing coolant, not much, about 6 or 8 ounces a month so. today i cleaned things up to see if i could figure out where it was going. if you have a look at the 2 pictures you can see where it gathers. its only on the lower radiator house outlet, nowhere else. my question is am i looking at weeping shaft on the water pump or possibly something else?

on other fronts i found quite a few oil pan bolts had worked themselves loose. corrected that, hopefully the driveway will be a little cleaner from now on.

also i still cant get the cruise working. im looking at a 700 mile round trip coming up at the end of july and would like that to work. i did the static tests listed in another thread here again. the only thing i can see thats a little off of the voltage given off by the VSS when i spin a wheel. is it possible that the VSS can crap out enough to kill the cruise but still work enough to not make other things go wonky?

Thanks for any and all advise.

Adam

Seems like coolant could come from several places, and even be blown over there by the fan. I would encourage you NOT to use the radiator stop leak product family just yet. While a small leak like this might be handled for a short time, it can bring on other issues. The older the radiator, and the previous owner's lack of use of distilled water can lead to calcium scale build up inside the small tubes. Stop leak can plug up those already restricted passages, leading to mucho grande problems. Best to carry a supply of water with you, and make sure you check daily or more often if travelling. Do this while making repairs, the first thing you do (like tighten every hose clamp or replace lower hose) may not fix it.

At least your coolant is going on the ground and not out the tail pipe or into the oil....

Order a hose kit and replace all the hoses BEFORE you go on any long drive is the safest approach. Mine was weeping from the short hose directly behind the alternator from the curved metal pipe to the side of the block. That port is larger than the others, but I used 3/4 inch heater hose, left off the curved pipe and ran the hose directly to the firewall connection. The other heater hose I also replaced, it merely goes from the other rigid pipe on top of the passenger side of the intake to the firewall.

Also make sure all your valve cover bolts are tight to avoid oil seeping out and puddling up in there too. These bolts should be checked periodically, they tend to loosen and you may think you need a new valley pan gasket when all you need is to tighten the bolts (I bought a gasket set then found this out).

Happy Trails with your new Discovery.

i read your earlier post about that short hose leaking and pooling which got me thinking and looking at that. in my case that hose is dry, but as you mentioned in your other post it gets a little bulgey. i was planning on replacing all the hoses before the big trip. the valve covers get checked pretty regularly. i think my other oil seep spot is the front main or camshaft seal, i wiped everything down yesterday so hopefully ill be able to identify where ist coming from. its not a major leak just some drips, but after 6 months you definitely know where my spot is at work lol
