I was hoping that it would be a little more robust for that kind of money. I would like it to be an actual socket that gets mounted under the truck. Not just a wire dangling back there. I saw one at Walmart that had a mountable socket with a dust cap.

i just ziptied it off for now so it doesnt catch on things or dangle in the wind...
and i havent seen many 4 pin setups that have mounting brackets for the plug. i suppose you could rewire the plug end for a 5 pin or something with a bracket, then just run an adapter whenever you tow a 4 pin trailer.

anyway, it didnt bother me enough to do anything about it, and i mostly plan on towing uhaul and uhaul-like trailers which only need the 4 pin.

The way I read it, two connectors involved in the space behind right tail lamps.

7 pin connector C400:

1 - red/orange - right rear side lights
2 - green/purple - brakes
3 - green/white - right turn (Clyde is optional)
4 - Green / red - left turn
5 - black - not sure if this will be ground or +12 (if +12 would be used for electric brake trailers to charge emergency brakes battery)
6 - red / yellow - rear fog lights
7 - red / black left rear side lights

Connector C424, also in that same space, pin 1 is green/brown and is back up lights. Now you might not have back up lights on your trailer, but if you have surge brakes there may be an electric soleniod to release the brakes if you are backing up hill.

 

I also went with the Atlantic British kit for plug-n-play. I also bought this: Multi-Tow® 7:4 Adapter :: Hopkins Towing Solutions in case I ever need to tow something with brakes, requiring the 7- blade socket. (OK, I have yet to actually mount it, or run the wires for brakes, and auxiliary, etc, but it will be sweet when completed!)

 

Im going to bump this back from the depths to see if anyone knows the part number for the male side of the C400 plug in the area behind the tail light or if it comes on any other rovers that it might be scavenged from in the junkyard.. Since the single I'm going to re-purpose some of the trailer wiring to drive my rear work lights on my rack using the stock wiring id like to use a connector and not hack into the stock trailer loom in case i need to add a trailer socket down the line. Since there is a 20 amp fused 12v line back there that i can use to supply power, a line for the rear fogs i can use to drive a relay to switch the power on from the stock rear fog light, and a ground all in the back routed right where i can access them.

If you only need 4 conductor you can substitute a 4-way round socket and plug.

Even though it's fused at 20amps, that axillary circuit wire is pretty small to be powering accessories from.
I ran a proper sized cable from the front along the chassis (routed carefully and protected) and used a bulkhead pass trough near the trailer wire grommet to get the power inside.
