Default Tranny Problem.

Oh.... Wait..... What!!!! Not that type of Tranny......A Transmission issue.
The first time i take my truck out for the day, It does not want to shift out of first gear for a very long time. I have to go about 2-3 miles before it finally shifts, then its fine for the rest of the day.
The fluid looks and smells clean. Doesnt taste to bad either.
Thanks

Take the vehicle out and try shifting manually to see if it shifts. Sounds almost like a valve body issue.

Valve body issue, you need to have it flushed.
If that does not do it you need it rebuilt, or at least replace the valve body with a good working one.

The governor has metal in it or the Viton rings are hard. The ZF units tend to collect any stray particles in the governor. When the Viton rings start to get hard they don't seal until the unit starts to warm up a bit and the warm fluid softens them and makes them pliable. Generally the metal comes from the A clutch being worn.

You MAY be able to save it (at least for a while) by pulling the transfer case out, removing the adapter housing, removing the governor support, and cleaning the governor and governor valves and replacing the Viton rings. The governor support actually rides on the overdrive drum, where the rings are located. You will also want to pull the pan and replace the filter and spray out the gray gunk coating the valve body. The best way to clean the governor is to disassemble it and use fine crocus cloth to polish the valves and the aluminum housing bores where the valves ride.

Put it all back together, fill it up, and cross your fingers.

UGH!!!!! I should have finished my first cup of coffee before reading this.
Im going to have to try flushing first and cross my fingers. I hate tranny work, Ive been forced to do it in my old Chevy's and Dodges before back in the day.
But im developing a real love hate relationship with my Disco.
Thanks for the help guys, will have to see what happens.

A note of caution, the ZF is more complex than the old Detroit iron. For a master like Higgs it is everyday, for us mere mortals not so much. Many Rovers are in boneyards because of overheat and engine problems, so a used tranny could also be an option.
