tranny replacement
Got to make major decision today. Apparentely my front driveshaft came loose while driving and caused the transmission to explode. Short version of what my mechanic has told me. Hes said the housing was cracked from one end to the other.
So the delima today is to have the tranny replaced w a range rover 4 speed and new seals fluids etc for $1650 or just salvage it. At first salvage was top on my mind. But after talking to my wife, she suggested that we fix it. She knows I really do like this money pit.
Like to hear what you guys think. Salvage or keep tossin money in it? Also does $1650 sound kinda high? Said the unit cost $650.

First of all, where are you located? You can put your location into your profile so we know whether we're talking about an NAS DI or a ROW DI, V8 or 200/300Tdi.
Now, if you're located in the US you have an NAS DI. What model year is it? I ask this because there are compatibility issues with a Range Rover depending on the years. If you own a '94 or '95 DI then you can use any Range Rover Classic transmission with no real issues. Obviously, get one with the lowest mileage. If you own a '96 or later DI then you will not be able to use the torque convertor from the Range Rover Classic on your DI. Changes to the flex plate and torque convertor from '96 on make them incompatible.
If your mechanic is thinking of using a P38a Range Rover transmission, that is completely out of the question.

1998 V8 Pensacola, FL I talked to the mechanic about this today and he assured me he had the right one and seemed a bit miffed about me asking. I know how it is (your armed w internet info and now your're an expert) I get that all the time in construction but I sure hope he knows his models. I have used this guy several times both on the Disco and my M3 so I do have some trust there. I just thought that knowing the unit is somewhere around $500-600, the labor seems high.
He may be miffed but if he has a transmission from a Range a Rover Classic he won't be able to get it to fit if he plans on using the Range Rover's torque convertor. If the trans mission is from a P38a Range a Rover it will never work. Bottom line, unless he really knows Rovers he's not likely to be aware of these differences.
BTW, if I had a DI transmission for it, it would be $400 including shipping from CT. Labor for the install shouldn't be much more than 10-12 hours. You're not getting much of a deal on a 20 year old used transmission.
