Default transmission fluid level

I did a trans filter change today and I'm a little confused on the level it should be. I put in 4 quarts then started it up ran through the gears and check the level. I had to add 1.5 more quarts to have it show up between min/high, But when i shut it down its way upon the dip stick.

Is this correct or have i over filled it?

RAVE says check when cold and in first gear. FWIW, mine indicates high on the dip stick when warm just as your does.

It doesn't strike me as a particularly accurate measuring system.

Yes very strange way of measuring the fluid.

As I understand it, you are measuring the level in the sump while the pump is actively moving fluid through the lines, torque converter, etc.

When you shut the truck off all that extra fluid falls back down to the sump, hence the extremely high level if you ever check the transmission fluid first thing in the morning, engine off.

This is why you check with the engine running, I always drive my truck up and down the street once to get the fluid moving around the box

Good point. Even RAVE says to shift through the gears before checking the level.

Yea I shifts through all the gears. Fluid is between min and max with truck running and I'm happy with that.

Previous statement is correct. While running the tranny pump draws fluid to circulate. Will always read higher when truck is off. Must check with truck running, preferably after running thru each gear first for most accurate measurement.
