Water pump bolt dilemma
My pump was leaking slowly for a while so I ordered a replacement from AB. I noticed as I was removing the old pump that the 10mm bolt on the bottom of the pump just to the left of the 2 11mm long bolts wasn't tight. Didn't think anything of it, replaced the pump and that bolt only gets slightly tightened and then lets go. The PO probably over tightened to try to fix the leak. Put it back together hoping for the best, but it drips from the bottom of the pump. The bolt looks fine, it's the housing.
Any suggestions on fixing this?
I also replaced the lower radiator hose, and thermostat, but no leaks there.

Hey Nick,
Did you ever sort this out? I seem to have the same issue.
I had my pump replace 2 years ago and have had a fluid loss ever since. I assumed it was the radiator or hose, since the waterpump was replaced.
I have since replaced my radiator and all hoses. I now realize that it has been my pump the whole time. Checking the bolts, I found the same issue as you.
Any advice would be great.
thanks

If the threads are stripped in the housing, your options are limited. I'm not sure if that bolt runs all the way through the front cover into the block or not. If it does, you may be screwed. If it doesn't, you could always replace the front cover... Pricey, but it would fix the problem. You could also try and fill the hole with JB weld, then drill and re-tap it, but I can't vouch for how well that will hold a bolt...
Is this a long bolt, or short bolt?
You have a few options.
1) Goober the hell out of the bolt with Right Stuff / RTV
2) Tap the hole for the next bigger size bolt and use that.
I'd go option 1 first.

Hey Greg,
I got the bolt in question to the tightest spot just before it let go and used some K-Seal to stop the weeping. If this were still my daily driver, I probably would have replaced the front cover. I finally broke down and bought a new car so Indy is now relegated to quick trips to the dog park and home supply stores these days. For now the K-Seal has continued to hold. I saw no coolant leak the last time I changed the oil.

Thanks for all of the input folks.
I have purchased a new coolant pump, gasket and new bolts. I would do a new cover but I don't have a garage to tear this thing all the way down.
I am going to try the Loctite PC 3967, stripped thread repair. I really do not want to pull the radiator (again). I just want to get this coolant system sorted.
We shall see when this happens. Available weekends are looking scarce for the next few months.
I really wanted to have this D2 squared away for the fall.

I have replaced the coolant pump and I tried the Loctite thread repair but it did not hold.
I ended up re-tapping the thread from m8 to m10 and used barrel head bolts for clearance
Only the bottom two bolt tread was stripped.
I used my torque wrench set at 17 ft/lbs. All bolts were tight. Hopefully this clears up my coolant leak after 2+ years.
I will be steam cleaning the engine so that I can more easily see an leaks.
