Vehicle speed sensor
The vehicle speed sensor is located on the side of the
Transfer box adjacent to the parking brake. The
sensor provides road speed data to the ECM. The
ECM in turn detects vehicle movement from the road
speed input and ensures that idle air control mode is
disengaged. Should the vehicle speed sensor fail in
service the ECM idle air control would become erratic.
The sensor also provides road speed data to the
electric speedometer and cruise control ECU.


That last little blurb - you probably were not watchying the speedo at that moment, beause of low speed anyway. The VSS also functions as part of the limiter system, if ECU thinks you are going too fast, it shuts down spark.

With all the sensors that connect directly to the ECU, I would guess that water on wires for one or two sensors could do the same as a wet ECU in some cases.

50ft into a giant mud run my motor cut after going through knee deep water. my airfilter was wet. and when you turned the key the relay under the dash would click many times crazily. i was flooring it(was nessesary) in 1st, 4 high, when i went into a hole going too fast trying to get momentum. anyways the rover finally started after 2 hours with the undercarrige being submerged. what about the eletric ignition or distrubitor-whatever the v8s have could that be a cause for shutting off?
