I can't remember what exactly its called or why exactly its there. However, mine finally got torn off last weekend while wheeling. I noticed no ill effects driving 2 hrs home at 70mph. In fact, my wife drove it the next day and actually said it drove better than before and wanted to know if I had changed anything, LOL.

It is a vibration damper for driveline vibrations, if its still there leave it alone.
There should be a cable attached to it so if it falls off it does not Kamikaze through a windshield.

And don't remove it or you will get a drive line vibration.

It's the counterbalance.

Get the bumper sticker that says: DANGER, PARTS MAY FALL OFF AT ANY TIME, FOLLOW CLOSELY AT YOUR OWN RISK MAY GO OFF-ROAD AT ANY TIME
DRIVER NOT RESPONSIBLE

I've seen it twice now on the trail where one of these comes loose, and that flimsy cable was either too weak to keep hold of it or was already broken.

Mine was gone when I bought it - replaced with a front pinion skid plate/guard. So, I can't offer a before and after opinion.
