Default What are the warning signs of bad engine/tranny mounts

What are the warning signs of bad engine or transmission mounts besides the obvious fan hitting the radiator or engine contacting underside of the hood?

It's not that there are any symptoms. The truck is a 98. I believe they are the originals. I don't see any large cracks or separations on them. That being the case, I figured if they were bad or going bad there might be some signs or indicators in the way the truck runs or performs.

Whenever I've had bad engine mounts, the engine rocks significantly to one side in Drive if ya give it a little gas. It would rock to the opposite side in Reverse if the other mount were bad. I don't know about Land Rovers, most mfgrs design the motor mounts in such a way that when they fail there is an internal 'catch' to prevent lifting beyond a certain point. Knowing L/R they probably overlooked that obvious detail and the fan WOULD hit the shroud ...but I'm just being sarcastic (I don't know how they're designed).

Anyway, you could look up from the bottom with a strong flashlight to see if you can see any signs of deep stress-cracking in the rubber, but I've seen some that were cracked and worked just fine. Beyond that, I don't know how you'd tell. The engines aren't terribly powerful so I'm not worried about my Disco's engine ripping the mounts out. Other than that, I don't know.

ok....this is an accepted method to check.....put a 2x4 or 2x6 under the oil pan and SLOWLY ....jack up the engine a little bit at a time just enough to see if the rubber in the mount has separated from the steel....you'll know right away if it has

Way we always test in other cars is to have someone pound the throttle while you watch. If the motor yanks up from a side the mount is generally bad.

While were here on the subject, since the diagrams I've looked at were confusing to me, we do only have 2 mounts on our blocks, correct? A right and left?
Also what's up with the tranny mounts, only 2 as well? Left and right also? I've looked and it's all I noticed.
The LR dealer catalog alludes to four on the block and tranny each?
Been thinking of going with these from lucky8:
