I you do it yourself, of have someone other than a glass installer do it, be sure they use the right adhesive. A windscreen is considered a structural member and if you don't use the correct adhesive it won't withstand the impact it should in a rollover.

I know I can get the glass cheap, but its the rubber thats going to cost me...

 

It's always the rubber that gets you in trouble every time, dont use it properly and BAM!!!, you're in trouble.

Did you ask them why it needs to be inspected? I dont see why you still could not add glass coverage, but you would have to keep it after you added it until your renewal.

I also have State Farm, I never had to have anything inspected when I switched over to them a year or so ago.

 

Probably a result of too many people doing what you suggested.

 

Are you doing the replacement yourself? Is your rubber trim damaged? You do realize the windshield is glued in place and the trim can be reused if you are careful. Might be a good idea to have it removed/installed by someone that has done it before if you want to save the trim and the hundreds of dollars that replacement trim cost. If you do decide to DIY, make sure you use the proper adhesive as antichrist mentioned and also properly prep the glass and frame. I have about 10-12 caulk gun tubes of the sealer if you need any.
