Question Wits end!!!!!

Please can anyone help me? i have a R reg discovery and for the last year it has been touch and go as to wheather it will start day to day.It has had a new battery and auternator which i have had checked and both show as being fine. I can drive roud for days with no probs and then bang the next morning theres nothing..No dash lights, no beeping but the key will not turn all the way forwardIt's like there is a sponge in the barrel stopping it .I had a new fob last year and it was good for a while.Sometimes the locks will not even open, its that dead. She will go well for a day or two after a jump start..I have disconnected the radio and the cd player etc to see if they are drainng the battery. A side from this she works very well. Understandably this is not going down too well with my wife a it is the summer hols and we have to little boys!
I would be gratefull for any advice offered.

1. Mechanical problems with ignition switch - see https://landroverforums.com/forum/di...ock-fix-35422/ for ideas.

2. Battery being dead - drain from stuff staying on when it should not. If skilled with volt/amp meter you can serach for drains. Would advise hold down hood alarm switch when jumping off, one of the first things the truck does when it "wakes up" is check to see if alarm should be armed (if it was when it went to sleep) - then checks of any open door, then sets of alarm and kills ignition.

With engine off, and alarm switch held or unplugged, you can remove the battery cable, and touch a brake light bulb inbetween terminal and battery post. Should not be glowing more than a moment. If keeps glowing, unplug fuses to narrow the hunt.

Listen to your wife, it will be the easiest and in the long run the cheapest and most satisfying thing for you to do.

Otherwise, you are in for a long, difficult, very frustrating experience that the rest of us pretty much suffer from currently.

Where are you, I will either take it off your hands for free or find someone else willing to drag the beast away for you. Listen to your wife, after all she can really make you miserable. An upset wife and a broke Rover are not a good combination.

You have to ask yourself which one you can do without the easiest.........
(I hope you have a good sense of humor)

My first thought about your problem was something wrong with ignition switch.

Make sure it is all the way in park.
If the battery is dead you are going to need to look for a parasitic draw.

It should crank in park or N. Key fob and key switch have no real correlation.

You may have multiple issues not one single problem. The steering wheel lock can also interfere with the key turning all the way. If my steering wheel lock is engaged, I have to pull slightly on the steering wheel while finessing the key forward, if you force it it can easily break.

I ended up taking all the plastic off my steering column even the littlke red light and the holder. I turn the key forward one position at a time very smoothly. If the key is forced in too far and the key forced forward, it will break in the lock.

A little dry graphite powder or spraying with WD40 will also help. Both the tumblers and the key body tend to wear with use, if your key is worn, buy a blank from Pauyl Grant or RN or somebody and get a spare one cut.

Or listen to your wife and get rid of it and you will be happier in the long run. It is probably cheaper to get rid of the Rover than the Wife. The Rover won't get half your stuff when you dump it.
