Default 02 new owner's list of questions

I'm really liking my new discovery: the view, the ride, the feel. I do have a list of simple questions:

When I turn the key, I hear the whirring of a fan. The engine covers the sound once it starts. This is not the cooling fan as this runs during the first minute or so once the engine starts. Are these fans normal?

It seems that the abs will make a "farting" noise when I start up unless the "three amigos" come on. Then I don't hear it. Also, after the motor is turned off, the abs unit will continue to make this strange noise. The dealer claims that they did a test and the three amigos did not show any codes.

if the vehicle appears to have had light use, at 120000 how urgent is the front drive shaft rebuild?

Why does the factory sound system sound so bad?

Fan noise may be the secondary air injection pump.

Don't know if your ABS is making the noise or your self leveling suspension

Drive shaft can go as early as 40,000. You are on borrowed time. The warning may be missed (a chirp) due to engine noise. If it snaps at speed, most can't get truck stopped before damage to tranny. As in replace tranny. Rebuild info in our tech area, or purchase after market shaft.

Some people like the sound system (with amps), some swap it out.

There is a factory shop, electrical, and owner manual set called the RAVE. You want your own download (free).

I don't think I have SLS or at least there is not the button referred to in the manual indicating SLS.

Where would the amp exist if I have one?

I plan to do the rebuild on the shaft next week. I saw the sticky and I got the RAVE manual. Very nice.

I have had this vehicle for 6 days now. I have already learned quite a bit.

Amp under seat or in rear door depending on type. Electrical manual has more info, and pictures.

The fan noise is the climate control interior temp sensor. It is left of the steering wheel behind a little grille. Mine comes on as soon as I turn on truck, even though hvac is off. The fan circulates air to avoid a false reading (sun shining on it, etc.)

True, that is another fan. And it can get a build up of dust. Most likely could use a good cleaning, which will make it work better and quieter. Here is how to get at it if vac of the grille is not enough.

Yes, that is normal. It should sound like a small vacuum running for a minute or two when you first start on a cold day. When warm, you should not hear it. It's the Secondary Air Injection Pump as Savannah mentioned.

At the very least, have it checked out by a driveline specialist. They do fail at some point.

I'm guessing speakers are blown. Factory system sounds as good as most factory systems in that era when it's working properly.

Rear subs are usually candidates for rot.

I do pro level sound for bands here in the LA area and I am amazed at how good the sound system is. Maybe there is something wrong with yours?

Wondered what that pump was, now I need to look and see how dirty it is, thanks.

I was under mine last weekend and I noticed zerk fittings on the front drive shaft, does that mean it has been replaced or did they come that way from the factory?
