'03 Disco II add/upgrade Oil Cooler
Finally got time to finish up my oil cooler install. Little bit of a pain in the neck, getting the hoses to line up perfectly in the front cover. Both are at a slight angle and had a time getting them straight and the fastening nut started. I am glad I went with the cooler and hoses that were factory, because no modifying needed. I just can't fathom why LR decided to eliminate them. I really do not expect to see much difference in engine temp, but will be watching it tomorrow.
After installing oil cooler, I have no more oil dripping on driveway. Both plugs, where the oil cooler lines connected to the front cover were only hand tight. And neither had an o-ring where there should have been one. Coolant temps range from 189*-194*. So, not much change. Still I feel better knowing there is a oil cooler helping. By the way, when I bought the vehicle, there was a ticking after it warmed up, and after installing 180* thermostat and changing oil to Rotella, ticking has vanished.

My ticking has also gone away after extensive work. I think the main contributing factors were a genuine 180 t-stat, '02 fan blade and Hayden 2991 fan clutch, and new radiator. Temps on the scan tool range between 185 and 198.

If you look right between the oil filter and the oil pan, you will see a somewhat large plug screwed into the front cover(it may appear to only be threaded about half-way). The other is on the passenger side about an 1 1/2-2" above the oil filter(same size plug). Be sure and route the hose on drivers side to where it will not hit the power steering pulley. The passenger side hose was a bugger to get lines up, because it does not come straight out, it is at a slight angle, aimed up a little. It would be easier to install the hoses to the engine, before you connect them to the cooler. you want to remove the upper shroud and remove the screws on the two radiator mounts and pull the drivers side mount away so you can push the radiator slightly back to engine and slide the cooler down into place. The cooler will fit about an inch above the transmission cooler. There is a tab on the passenger side cooler that slips into a slot on the radiator mount you loosened. the two hose mounts on the cooler will go where there are round cutouts on either side of the radiator. I will take some pics and post and maybe it will help a little.

Thx,

I buy and use oil coolers from Speedway Motors on our race cars. With an adapter they should work on a D2. I am ordering one now 13 row oil cooler $89.00 plus fittings.
Alternate cooler is the mini we use on the sprint car $239.00
Big deal I see is the Adapter to hook it to.
As I stated Dumb *** Question

Well.....
Oil Cooler is in! I mounted it behind the grill, in front of the radiator and condenser, on the struts that hold the grill in place.
Overall impression of the unit I bought --->>
Amazon.com: 10-Row 10 An Engine Oil Cooler+Silver M20 Sandwich Cooler Adapter Plate+Hose: Automotive
Good build, hoses are HUGE and top-notch. AN fittings, adapter is well machined and fits fine.
Takes the 3/4-16 adapter, and I just used an adjustable to make it tight. Also has two taps for oil temp sensors and oil pressure sensors if you're into that sort of thing.
Ordered some different zip ties (stainless steel - pretty!) to hold the hoses and such, I don't do much off-road, but a proper job is a good idea.
Have my grill off, so going to clean and plasti-dip it while it's off the truck. Want to do my cracked bumper too, its annoying me and I have tomorrow to fix it.
I'll report back with engine temps, I topped off the rover with my Liqui-Moly super duper ducati oil, so it better be happy. That stuff's not cheap...

I should be receiving my '02 oil cooler and lines to install in my '04 today. What front cover ports did you use? I suppose the lines should make it clear, just wanted to double check.
