04 Discovery Stalled, now turns over but no start
Hey Everyone,
I have a 04 Discovery with 80,000 miles. The other day I was driving it home from work (less than 2 miles) and it stalled at my intersection. It would turn over but not start. Also the battery completely died after 3 times trying to turn it over. ( holding the key less than 3 seconds) The car did have a valve tick, but only once the oil warmed up. I thought it might be a head gasket but when I started taking the plastic shrouds off today I noticed the coolant line going to the top of the thermostat was completely disconnected? I didn't do that but maybe that had something to do with it.
I stopped tearing it down until I can get a new battery in there, or charge the one I have so I can see if it will start up, but does anyone have any thoughts? I worked at Toyota as a mechanic for a few years, but I'm new to Land Rovers. My thoughts are: head gasket, or bad battery, or no coolant, or bad alternator?
Please help if you can! Thank you.

Make sure you put in a 700CCA rated battery, then have the charging system tested, idle voltage with all power on should be between 13.6 and 14.4 volts.
If you still have a stalling or starting issues, probably have a bad crank sensor.

Sounds like a bad CPS (Crankshaft position sensor). If it starts back up after sitting for awhile and cooling down and then dies again after it warms up then it's the CPS. The part is under $100 and the sensor is right above the driverside of the y-pipe. It is only 2 or 3 bolts and sounds like an easy fix but the y-pipe makes getting your hands up in there a PITA. It should be a 1-2 hour job if it's your first time doing it. Good luck and have fun. With 80,000 miles this is probably the first of many repairs you have coming just around the corner. If you have a stock front drive shaft then you may want to get a new one with zirks for grease before you have to replace the transmission.
Not sure how vehicle could operate with hose missing from thermostat. You would have massive coolant loss. Here is a cutaway drawing, cold water comes in the bottom, hot sample comes in the top to trigger the thermostat to open, and flow goes out the side arm to the water pump.
Thanks for all the help guys. I'm taking the battery in to get tested right now. I reconnected the coolant lines & filled it up. It was completely empty. It might be the CAS, I replaced it once already at 50,000 miles but who knows. I'll test it again and see what happens. Hopefully it just starts right up with a new battery.
This happened to me last year, I did everything that has been mentioned on this thread and it was none of them, turned out it was my fuel pump. Mine is an 04 and have around 90-95k miles on it at the time
