04 Engine Rebuild Replacement Parts?
As some of you know I'm making payments on a 2004 Discovery. Keys will be in my hands this November. Truck has around 130 on the clock and the engine has a ticking. So as advised from fellow members, I'm putting together a "engine overhaul fund" in preparation for the distant but inevitable engine rebuild. I'll be purchasing all the replacement parts myself piece by piece, and when the time comes I'll pay a trusted mechanic to perform the rebuild. What I need from the forum now is a complete list of all the parts that should be purchased for the rebuild (IE: head gaskets, engine mounts, valves etc) part numbers would be a bonus if you have them. I also need to know if there are any grease/lubs or anything like that which should also be purchased for the rebuild? Everything a mechanic would need for the job (excluding tools). I figure that I will save some $$$$ by searching around and buying all the parts myself... while the engine is out and exposed what else should be replaced?
Below is a list of all the parts I believe should be replaced during the rebuild, please let me know if there's anything else I'm missing.
Head gasket kit
Camshaft sensor
Camshaft
Oil pump gear kit
Push rods
Timing chain
Coolant gauge sensor
Oil seals
Water pump
Tensioner/pullies
Crankshaft sensor
O2 sensors
MAF sensor
Engine mounts
Thermostat
All new bolts, nuts, washers
New cooling system hose kit with new clamps
Spark plugs and wires
Ignition coils
Love my Disco and I'm very serious about this rebuild so all useful input greatly appreciated.

I would agree somewhat. The engine internals, oil pump, timing chain, front and main seals, water pump, engine mounts, crank sensor, timing cover etc are all the main things. BS stuff like O2's, MAF, even all new bolts isn't really necessary unless these parts are obviously worn out or are throwing codes . Plugs and wires should be replaced but there is no point in replacing ignition coils if they are still good, OEM coils are stupid expensive and hardly ever fail. I wouldn't personally replace with all new hoses all around unless they were obviously worn and I had the extra cash, but the hard to reach ones would be worth replacing.

So far the total is around $2,576.70 for all the parts I have listed above if purchased from AB. While the engine is being worked on I would like to get some of the general maintenance complete to. In reality I'll be able to do the O2 sensors, wires, plugs, maybe the ignition coil pack and a few other things myself so I'll save a little more on labour. But I want to prepare early for the 200k mark and I want to avoid ever having any overheating issues or any other engine issues for that matter. Most everything else on the Disco I can work on myself when it is needed, but having the engine exposed..... well I hope this will be a once every blue moon ordeal.

I would suggest you make a slight change in your direction. Yes it is a good idea for you to start putting money together for parts, but don't going buying everything till you open the engine up.
Yes, many of the items you have posted could be needed and yes once you find the tick, it may be a quick fix as most of them are.
So save away but wait till the engine is open them buy.

Let me also make a suggestion, buying the parts yourself may end up being a bad idea. I own a service and restoration shop and we have a policy (most shops do) that if the customer is supplying the part then there is NO warranty on the work provided. If you are trusting a shop to rebuild your engine and one minor issues goes wrong and they do not warranty due to parts being supplied by you then you have a bigger issue, and a lot more to spend on another rebuild. If I were you I would find a trusted shop that knows Rovers work a deal with them to give you a discount on the parts and get them ALL through that shop. You will be better off in the long run. Plus as Disco Mike pointed out, you may be buying more than you actually need.

I agree about finding a rover specific shop to perform the work, and more than likely I'll be heading to DAP enterprise for the rebuild. The whole thing about trying to negotiate a deal with the shop for a discount on the parts is something I'm willing to pursue when the time comes.
Mike thanks as always for your input. Have you watched the video I posted on my other thread "check out this craigslist steal"? What are your thoughts about the engine sounds? Maybe I'll hold off on getting all those parts, but i really want to ensure the longevity of the engine for as long as possible, and I want to avoid having to pull the engine twice just to replace any single component down the road. So while its out i really want to do as much as possible before the engine gets re-installed.
I would assume you are holding off on gettng all of the parts nil you actually need them. Having a moetary target to shoot for and saving accordingly certainly isn't a bad idea, but turning that into a pile of parts before they are needed is a bad idea.
