Default 1997 disco 4.0 What Gas mpg should I be getting.

I was wondering if I should be getting better mpg than I am getting. I am currently getting about 8 mpg. That sucks! My 96 Dodge 318 V8 gets better than that. How can that Be. I know this is a V8 but come on. I guess all time 4x4 could do it but am I missing something? Can this get better mpg and how or what to check. The check engine light is not on. The cat converter has come apart from the connection at the Y. Any help would be apreciated. This is going to go up for sale. Thank you.

I get 13-14mpg around town and about 18 on long interstate trips at 60 mph. I have a 1998 Disco I.

You are going to need to put some time into this truck, and it will be worth while when all is said and done.
Need to fic the exhaust system first, can't have any leaks or the ECU won't be able to run the engine.
How many miles on the engine?
Yes, you will be able, with a little help to get up to around 18MPG on the road.

Can I bypass the cat converter. I know it is illeagal but I cant pay 450.00 for a new exhaust plus labor. Do you think this fix either way will help my mpg. What else should I do. It has 111,000 miles and runs great. I just put a used fuel pump in it because the old one went bad. I will maybe consider keeping if I can get the mpgs worked out. Also when I bought it there was a plug in emission maintenance reminder plugin the glove box. Is that so it doesnt show an icon on my dash for a problem with the emmissions? I thought maybe thats how the previous owner hid that exhaust problem from me. There was no sign of this problem sound or visual until it finaly came apart. Thanks Mike and jim for your reply. If you can help please reply more. Also where does that 5 prong plug go( AMR5551)?

Go here: http://www.magnaflow.com/01trucks.asp

Find a local dealer and get a quote. I paid $350 for 2 new high flow cats installed.

The emissions reminder is just that, a reminder. It goes off every 80K miles. There is a write up on how to reset it on Discoweb.

Where is the 5 prong plug located. I have a 97 as well and have been through every inch of it..

No you cannot bypass the cats, your mpg will suck. You will get like, umm, 8 mpg.
Spend the money and get it fixed right.
That emissions reminder needs to be plugged in, remove the kick panel under the glove box and find out where it goes and then plug it back in.
Do a tune up too.
