Default 1998 Discovery LE Engine swap

I have a 1998 Discovery with a 4.0 engine.I am looking for a used engine to install.I have found engines available but I'm not sure what years I can install.I was also told to make sure that I get the control module with the replacement engine because of the California emissions.
Any info would be very helpful.

Thank you

If you are in an area that has emission testing you can install any engine 98 or newer. Depending on the condition of your current external engine parts you can transfer them over to the new used engine.

Are you talk about a short block or a complete engine, and what is wrong with your old engine?

You can use a 96 to 99 GEMS engine. The 95's have a distibutor drive that you will have to modify. If you use a 99.5 and up BOSCH, you will have to modify the knock sensors, change tha camshaft sprocket and use an electric fan. The front cover is different.

This is for the shortblock. If you are doing a drop in, a 97 to 99 GEMS will fit. They are all AEL engines.

Also answer what Mike asked...

By law, since you have a 98 you can not use an engine from a 97. If they look at the engine serial number the emissions tester will be able to find out what year the engine came from. If you are caught with an engine that is older than your truck it will not pass emissions and can not be registered.

If you don't live where they have emissions testing than you drop in any engine you want but be prepared to sell the truck if you decide to move.
